CCIP Training
The Center for
Children of Incarcerated Parents offers training to
professionals and the public through three different
mechanisms.
CCIP National
Training Institutes
When CCIP opened in
1989, we began by developing our program, conducting
empirical research and delivering services but soon
discovered three important things:
Although we receive
dozens of requests for help from clients every day,
we were also receiving an almost equal number of
requests for assistance from other agencies and
professionals in the field.
Agencies wanted help
understanding and applying historical and current
research findings on children of criminal offenders
& their families.
And, those who employed
and supervised practitioners wanted assistance in
developing appropriate practices and appropriate
staff for work with this population.
In 1991, as a result of
these discoveries, CCIP began a program of technical
assistance to the field. We currently work
with 50-75 agencies per year, providing training,
research and documentation, program design and
development, evaluation and other types of technical
assistance services. However, not everyone who
wants training is affiliated with an agency and many
agencies cannot afford general staff training.
The CCIP Training
Institutes are a way to disseminate the information
and expertise we have developed to a larger number
of agencies and individuals than we could otherwise
serve. Our first Institute, “Mommy, Baby & Me:
Working in Mother-Child Correctional Programs” was
offered in October, 2001. Each year, we offer 4-6
Institutes on a variety of topics. We are
pleased to offer Institutes that focus on a
developmental approach to practice with criminal
offenders and their children.
